Most people consider aluminum wheels a cosmetic upgrade, and that is often exactly what they are. In the racing world most owners tend to lessen the weight of their truck so much hey won’t consider any of the benefits of a well-made aluminum wheel. However, a slightly heavier wheel and tire combination can have some advantages, as it makes the car feel even more stable on the track than a super lightweight combination can. So aluminum wheels can have their place in the racing world as well as the bashing world.
SPI Racing Wheels took this into consideration when they designed their wheels, and sought to focus on the performance of the wheel itself on an off-road track. One of the most known ways to increase a truck’s stability is to make it wider, so SPI used this though and developed an offset that would increase the width of the truck enough to make a dramatic handling difference.
However, the goods don’t end with just the design. SPI uses billet 6061-T6 aluminum to make their wheels, resulting in a very strong wheel once it’s finished. Keep in mind though, that the strength of each wheel will be determined in part by the design and weight of the wheel itself. Some of the designs are simply going to be tougher than others, with the American appearing to be a well-balanced choice overall. This is why I choice this particular design.
The American wheels tipped my scales at around 3.4 oz. each. That’s really not a lot of weight, considering most stock wheels tip the scales at slightly over 2 oz. already. Most aluminum wheel options out there easily double the weight of the wheel, but this is not the case with the SPI Racing American wheels.
I like the fact that the wheels already have a vent hole predrilled into them. This means that there is no need to perform this yourself. Drilling a vent hole in aluminum takes a little more effort than it does with a plastic wheel, so this should considerably speed things up for the consumer. One last not is the fact that the machining process and finish of the wheel is excellent. This thing looks super sharp, thanks to the attention provided by SPI Racing!
The wheel and tire combination made a huge difference overall, giving me lots of traction throughout the corners. That offset change helped tremendously, adding nearly 2.5 inches of overall width to the truck. The result was a great deal more stability in the corners, and a truck that felt more sure-footed over the jumps. Cornering speeds went up dramatically, as I was able to enter and exit the corner several MPH quicker than with the stock narrowed stance.
Another thing I noticed, in changing wheels and tires back and forth for testing, was how well machined the hex on the back of the wheel was. It fit the plastic adapter perfectly, eliminating slop while not being overly tight when it came time to switch back to the stock wheels. This is a perfect example of the craftsmanship used on these wheels.
